The two politicians took the opportunity to discuss the conflict in Ukraine, and how better to secure NATO territory in future, particularly in Eastern Europe.

Luxembourg’s defence minister said: “We absolutely agree that it is necessary to increase the investment into our common defence.” He added that Luxembourg would continue to fulfil its obligations as an ally, and would engage in projects which would benefit the community.

“Since 2014, Luxembourg has more than doubled its defence effort and we are committed to doubling it again by 2028,” Bausch explained.

The cyber and space sectors were also included in the discussion, which covered Luxembourg’s involvement. It was recently announced that the Grand Duchy would build and host a “Cyber Defence Cloud”, with a budget of 250 million euros. The project may also be used by NATO countries for defence purposes. In addition, Luxembourg is set to launch its own observation satellite into orbit through LUXEOSys.
