Stolen car statisticsFrançois Bausch challenges Eurostat figures painting Luxembourg as EU car-theft capital

The Minister of Internal Security stated 55 cars per 100,000 inhabitants were stolen, rather than the figures given by Eurostat.

A report published in November named Luxembourg the car theft capital of Europe, with an average of 328 cars per 100,000 inhabitants stolen between 2015 and 2017. However, in a response to a parliamentary question posed by CSV MPs Nancy Arendt and Léon Gloden, Bausch refuted this statement and explained the government's figures differed to those published by Eurostat.

Police figures do not reflect the same reality, according to the minister. Still based on 100,000 inhabitants, data from the Luxembourg authorities give an average of 55 cars per year for the same duration.

According to this calculation, the Grand Duchy would not be ranked first place, but in 20th position in comparison with other EU member states.

An explanation for the discrepancy in figures was not provided.
