STATECFive Luxembourg municipalities boast average salaries over €10,000 per month

RTL Today
There are currently five municipalities in Luxembourg where residents enjoy average monthly salaries surpassing €10,000, a figure markedly higher than the national average and reflective of serious disparities in income distribution.

These municipalities — Niederanven, Leudelange, Kopstal, Schuttrange, and Strassen — stand out for boasting the highest mean salaries across the country. Notably, Niederanven has set a record with an average salary of €12,645, according to a 2023 study published by the National Institute of Statistic and Economic Studies (STATEC).

However, it is important to contextualise these figures. While the average paints a picture of prosperity, it is crucial to acknowledge that it represents a spectrum of earnings within these communities. For instance, the median salary in Niederanven stands at €6,659, indicating that half of the residents earn less than this amount, while the other half earns more.

Similar calculations were conducted for the remaining municipalities, all of which boast average salaries surpassing €10,000 and median salaries exceeding €6,000. These figures underline the affluence enjoyed by a significant portion of the population in these areas.

An average salary of €7,000 per month

As of March 2023, the national average salary in Luxembourg hovers around €7,000 per month, as confirmed by STATEC to our colleagues from RTL Infos on Friday. It is important to note that these averages are expressed as gross salaries and are based on individual remuneration rather than household income. Consequently, net earnings vary depending on factors such as tax classification and familial circumstances.

Leudelange trails Niederanven

Following Niederanven, the municipality of Leudelange emerges with an average monthly salary of €11,765. Kopstal follows closely with €11,324, while Schuttrange and Strassen round out the top five with average salaries of €10,629 and €10,267, respectively. In these communities, half of the residents earn more than €6,000 monthly.

Conversely, the municipalities of Differdange, Wiltz, Pétange, Rumelange, and Vianden exhibit the lowest average salaries, ranging from €4,038 to €4,311 per month. Examining median salaries, Differdange, Rumelange, and Wiltz come up again, but Echternach and Reisdorf replace the latter two municipalities.

STATEC underscores the regional disparities in salary distribution, noting that the Luxembourg City region, “as the country’s main economic and financial hub,” generally boasts higher salaries. In contrast, more “rural” regions experience lower average salaries due to a constrained job market and a less diversified economy, as observed by STATEC.
