5. Luxembourg is a champion at plurilingualism

Besides Luxembourgish, French and German, the three official languages, many residents also speak a foreign language. According to Eurostat, secondary school students were studying 2.5 foreign languages in 2012 - no other country in Europe rivals this.

More recently, around 81% of secondary school pupils were studying two - or more - foreign languages in 2018. Only Romania is doing better.

4. The highest minimum wage in the EU

Luxembourg is recognised as one of the countries with the highest salaries in Europe. Its minimum wage is well ahead of other EU countries - it is the only country to provide a minimum wage of more than €2,000 a month. At €2,141.99 per month for an unskilled worker, Luxembourg has put quite a distance between second-place Ireland with €1,706.90 per month. The qualified minimum wage was €2,570.39.

3. Luxembourgers love to drive

Behind Liechtenstein, which is not part of the EU, Luxembourg is the country with the most cars. On our roads there were 676 private cars per 1,000 inhabitants in 2018. That is nearly 400,000 cars.

German brands Volkswagen, BMW, Audi and Mercedes are among the five most common cars in Luxembourg's fleet.

2. Travel abroad at 98%

The year 2020 has put a stop to international travel and Luxembourgers have felt it. In 2018, 98% of the trips they made were abroad, but of course the size of the country plays a large part in this statistic. Stays within the country represented just under 2% of the total. Travellers have since regained a taste for "Made in Luxembourg" trips with the "Vakanz Doheem" campaign.

1. Big salaries for teaching staff

At the beginning of their career, a civil servant teacher with a bachelor's degree can earn, on average, over 67,000€. With a master's degree that amount adds up to €76,000. This tops every other country in the EU.
