Residents in southern Luxembourg and cross-border workers received long-awaited news on Friday: the first section of the widened A3 motorway will open to traffic on Sunday, 23 March. The announcement was made by Minister for Mobility Yuriko Backes during a press briefing held on the newly completed stretch of road.

The ambitious construction project, which began in January 2022, has been a source of frustration for many, particularly French border residents who commute daily to Luxembourg. Initially slated for completion by the end of 2024, the project faced delays due to a failed tender process for gantry signs. However, the first 3.5 kilometre section of the widened A3 – featuring 2x3 lanes between Aire de Berchem and Croix de Gasperich – is now ready for use.

During the press briefing, Minister Backes highlighted the new lane dedicated to carpooling and buses, as well as upcoming works on the motorway. The full project, which aims to widen 13.3 kilometres of the A3 to 2x3 lanes between the French-Luxembourg border and Croix de Gasperich, is expected to be completed by 2030.

With an estimated cost of €450 million, the project underscores the government’s commitment to “promote sustainable and efficient mobility in Luxembourg, optimising traffic flow and encouraging car-sharing and public transport,” according to the Ministry of Mobility.
