Minister for Energy Claude Turmes and Minister for Mobility and Public Works François Bausch issued an official response to the enquiry. Minister Turmes elaborates that hydrogen is not yet climate friendly enough, since its production almost entirely relies on fossil fuels. These conditions therefore need to be altered on European level to make the process less expensive.
Minister Bausch meanwhile confirmed that Luxembourg's first hydrogen fuel station will be installed in Bertrange before the end of the year, right across from the Delhaize supermarket. Negotiations lasted four years in total.
Hydrogen fuel is mostly applied in long-distance travel and heavy vehicles. For cars, electric batteries are still considered a better alternative. Nevertheless, hydrogen cars can already be supported through leasing agreements. It is still to be decided whether or not they will be added to the government's list of benefits.
