Connecting Esch-sur-Alzette to BelvalEurope's longest cycle bridge inaugurated on Friday

The cycle bridge in the country's south was inaugurated on Friday, despite the fact that the project's financing bill was only passed in the Chamber of Deputies earlier this week.

The impressive soft mobility project now stretches 1,200 metres over the former steel production site of ArcelorMittal. The “longest cycle bridge in Europe” will connect Esch-sur-Alzette to Belval.

While the budget for the construction in 2020 was €34.5 million, it was increased to €36 million just one year later due to additional work and rising costs for raw materials. Minister for Mobility François Bausch eventually tabled a financing bill in October, after the budget reached €47.5 million, crossing the threshold at which the Chamber of Deputies must give its approval.

The Ministry justified the latest increase by citing unforeseen circumstances that had to be considered during construction.

This project serves as an important foundation for the national cycle path PC8, while also remaining accessible to pedestrians and allowing emergency access to the Grand Ducal Fire and Rescue Corps (CGDIS).
