Nicolas Schmit, who has served as the European Commissioner for Jobs and Social Rights since 2019, cast his vote in Berdorf on Sunday morning. The lead candidate of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats (S&D) for the post of Commission President expects strong election results for social democrats and socialists across Europe, as he revealed in conversation with RTL.
Schmit noted that his faction is focused on responding to the needs and concerns of people in Europe, which he is determined to do over the next five years. He stressed that the ongoing elections will show in which direction the continent is headed, even if, as he believes, people are not always aware of the crucial function that parliament and commission president play.
Schmit ended by saying that the EU should continue on the path of democracy, increase its social support, gain in economic strength, and create jobs.
