Opposition parties in Echternach have used the floods to criticise the local Aldermen Council, and local officials in return put blame for lacking restoration work on the Ministry for Culture.

In conversation with RTL, Minister Sam Tanson argued that national issues have no place in a municipal election battle and that there are a number of things in need of clarification.

According to signs put up by Echternach officials, the local park has still not been restored to its former glory due to opposition from the Ministry, which is accused of having stopped the efforts. Minister Tanson acknowledged that she put an end to the works due to a lack of special authorisations needed for work on the heritage site.

The state is the main owner of the park in question, but according to Echternach Mayor Yves Wengler, the government has shown little interest in recent years while only local funds have been used to maintain the area.

This week, domestic and foreign specialists will visit Echternach and evaluate whether the planned flood protection concept for the site will end up reducing the risk of detrimental floods.
