For reasons unknown, a motorist lost control of his vehicle at around 7.40am on a left turn before veering sharply off the road on the N22.
His vehicle then rolled several times before coming to rest in a field below the road. Despite the severity of the impact, the driver escaped virtually unscathed, while the convertible was clearly badly damaged.
An alcohol test was carried out on the spot by the police before the driver was taken to hospital for a check-up.
Traffic was slightly affected while the emergency services and the police intervened.
