Opposition parties in Differdange have come out swinging against the municipal council for failing to inform councillors in a timely fashion about a major financial error, in which the commune mistakenly transferred more than €400,000 to a fraudulent account.

Although the incident took place in May, councillors only learned of the transfer at the end of September, which the opposition likened to "salami tactics" and unacceptable during a joint press conference on Wednesday morning.

The Democratic Party (DP), déi Gréng (the Greens), and déi Lénk (the Left) reminded that the entire council must be kept properly informed and involved in important matters.

They warned that if the situation does not improve, they will demand the resignation of the entire municipal executive board.

However, the parties did not specify what changes would convince them that they are being taken more seriously in future.

Fraudulent transfer linked to cybercrime

The error came to light recently, revealing that the commune transferred more than €400,000 to the wrong account as part of the new town hall construction project.

The mishap occurred after criminals hacked the architects’ office server and altered the banking details provided to the commune.

Despite alerting both police and the bank quickly after discovering the fraud, it appears unlikely that the stolen funds can be recovered.
