Speaking to RTL, Diekirch Mayor Charel Weiler underlined his commitment to making people’s voices heard: “We are giving our town centre a new face, a modern face, and that is why it was evident for us that we have to involve people. Because it is also their pedestrian zone, so they have to be able to participate. We had an information meeting, followed by an online questionnaire, which is still ongoing.”
People can still respond to the poll until 31 May. In the meantime, municipal employees took a tour of the town with interested citizens to provide explanations about certain locations and listen to concerns and ideas.
Workshops with local businesspeople are also being planned, explained Mayor Weiler: “It is clear that when you redo the main street, then businesspeople will be worried. That is why we are conducting a workshop with the business association to hear both their ideas and concerns. We will, for instance, see to it that we start with work on the Place de la Libération in winter rather than in summer. It is also clear that we will have to proceed in phases.”
The project is hoped to be finalised and officially unveiled by the end of the year. Weiler was unwilling to speculate about the projected duration of the project. When asked about the planned ‘Kléck’ construction site, the Mayor announced that work will kick off in September and last for two years.
