
According to RTL information, the mayor is expected to cease her responsibilities as head of the commune in March. As of yet, it is unknown who will be her successor. The DP deputy mayors are Youri de Smet and the former mayor Frank Colabianchi.
Monique Smit-Thijs was appointed mayor after Frank Colabianchi’s mandate ended in 2022. The commune did not share further details about why the politician resigned or whether she will keep her position as local councillor.
In Bertrange, the Democratic Party has seven mandates, their opposition is made up of six seats divided into Green Party (Déi Gréng), the Christian Social People’s Party (CSV), and Luxembourg Socialist Workers Party (LSAP) mandates. In 2005, Smit-Thijs first took part in the local elections.
In 2009, she moved up into the local council after Paul Geimer left. After becoming mayor in 2022, her popularity did not decrease, as she had a high position on the DP’s election list in 2023.
