31 December 2022Deadline for the procedure to recover Luxembourgish nationality extended

RTL Today
Descendants in the direct line of an ancestor who had the Luxembourgish nationality on 1 January 1900 and then lost it can apply for Luxembourgish nationality via the so-called recovery procedure.

Within the framework of this procedure, the deadline by which the person concerned must sign an official declaration of recovery of Luxembourgish nationality with a civil registrar will be extended to 31 December 2022, due to the travel restrictions imposed by the pandemic. The previous deadline was 31 December 2021.

This clarification was made by Minister of Justice Sam Tanson in response to a parliamentary question by MP Marc Goergen from the Pirate Party.

The main issue is that, under the nationality law, the applicant has to travel to Luxembourg to sign their declaration of recovery. This was not possible for a number of people because of the travel bans during the health crisis.
