RefugeesCSV: Municipalities should take on more responsibility

RTL Today
Currently, about 29 municipalities are involved in managing the 58 houses run by the Luxembourg reception and integration office OLAI. Politicians are now appealing for other municipalities to also step up to the plate.

About 29 out of all 102 municipalities in Luxembourg are currently involved in managing OLAI properties. Towards the end of January, 73% of beds were already filled.

After a foreign policy committee meeting at Luxembourg's Chamber of Deputies on Monday, Christian Social People's Party (CSV) politician Claude Wiseler appealed to other municipalities to stand in solidarity with the 29 communes that are already working with OLAI. On this topic, the government clearly has the support of the largest opposition party in parliament.

Jean Asselborn is expected to make another appearance in front of the responsible parliamentary commission to present more figures regarding reception facilities this spring. The foreign minister and minister for immigration also plans to start a dialogue with municipalities.

49.2% of the refugees that are currently still at reception facilities should have been rehoused by now since they were given the right of residence. However, this is proving difficult in a country where housing is one of the main issues.

Asselborn is looking to find potential reception facilities and housing for refugees that have obtained their right of residence and now want to settle down in Luxembourg.
