The government had said it is not interested in purchasing the estate, leading a collective of five northern municipalities - which includes Erpeldange-sur-Sûre - to express interest in taking over the castle.
However, the municipality said they had not been consulted on the purchase of the castle, neither in terms of potential offers, nor of the valuation of the estate.
The councillors said they had been informed of the potential purchase by the college of aldermen, and were not given further details.
Their statement cited the government's concerns over renovation and maintenance costs, estimated to be extremely high, as fuelling their reluctance to proceed with the venture.
They went on to query where the money would come from to fund the purchase, as the five municipalities have not yet published a financial plan.
