The sector’s emissions exceeded the government’s target by 30.8%. Many companies are finding it difficult to reduce their emissions any further, according to the Federation of Luxembourg Industrialists (FEDIL). On the other hand, other companies have met their targets.
This is the case of Eurofoil, for example, which has been producing aluminium since 1982. The company has made significant efforts in recent years to save energy and reduce CO2 emissions. It is currently installing a large photovoltaic park on the factory roof. “So far, we have managed to meet the emission targets,” says Eurofoil director Mario Vagli. To achieve this in the future, however, considerable financial investments will be required.
Not all companies can afford to invest heavily in modernising their production lines, according to FEDIL. Often the required technologies are not yet available, says FEDIL Director René Winkin. In addition, there is currently not enough green electricity or hydrogen available to cover the industry’s demand.
While the industry does not question the climate targets, it criticises the “lack of concrete plans on how to achieve them.”
