The two parties are no strangers to coalition governing, after spending the last six years ruling the capital’s municipal council. Mayor Lydie Polfer of the DP and CSV alderman Serge Wilmes emphasised the harmonious nature of the discussions on Thursday and revealed that urban development was a key topic for the talks.
Wilmes said: “We agree that it is important to continue developing the existing 24 districts, while constructing new districts in a way which will guarantee the best quality of life, while meeting environmental requirements and energy needs. We will also focus on making public spaces greener.”
In terms of resource distribution, Polfer explained that although the DP gained a seat from the CSV, they wanted to remain with the same number of aldermen. Discussions on the distribution of roles had not yet taken place.
Wilmes added that it had been agreed the DP would maintain four council members with the role of mayor, while the CSV would have three with Wilmes himself as first alderman. Responsibilities would be assigned over the coming weeks.
The new municipal council is expected to presented in mid-July, with talks due to conclude over the next fortnight.
