In a reply to a parliamentary question from Mars di Bartolomeo (LSAP), Health Minister Martine Deprez explains that there is a current processing time “of between six and eight weeks”.

As a result, CNS agencies have seen a 40% increase in the number of visits in 2023. “Despite the various organisational adaptations, current staff shortages mean that the CNS cannot meet public demand to a sufficient extent.”

In an attempt to speed up the process, the CNS has set up a new project to increase the number of fee statements that can be processed by optical scanning.

Ultimately, the only way to simplify and speed up reimbursements is to make direct third-party payment more widespread. The system is open to general practitioners, and will be extended to specialists and dentists from Tuesday, 19 March.

Provided that they agree to install the equipment, as there is a charge for installation. At the moment, the government is granting a €625 subsidy to encourage practices to install the computer system. For policyholders, there are no major changes, as the immediate direct payment will coexist with the traditional system, as in it will still be possible to pay as normal and then claim reimbursement from the CNS.
