Ciné Sura in Echternach has closed its doors.
The cinema, which had been screening films since 1991, had regularly faced challenges in maintaining operations, like other small cinemas. Over the years, it had turned to crowdfunding and launched innovative initiatives, including a drive-in cinema at the Echternach lake.
On Tuesday, the cinema's managers posted a brief message on social media stating: "Dear friends of Ciné Sura. We are closed as of today." No further information or explanation was provided at the time.

The closure follows the exclusion of Ciné Sura from the Federation of CDAC – Cinextdoor during a vote at the last extraordinary general assembly. The Centre for Film Screening and Promotion (CDAC) is an independent association of the eight – now seven – regional cinemas, which include Ciné Orion, Ciné Prabbeli, Kulturhuef Kino, Kinoler, Ciné Le Paris, and Ciné Starlight. Its primary role is to manage communication with foreign distributors, particularly to ensure the distribution of quality films to regional cinemas and their members.
According to CDAC – Cinextdoor, Ciné Sura allegedly violated internal statutes and regulations. However, the federation stated that it continues to pursue dialogue.
The managers of Ciné Sura have not provided any details or explanation regarding the closure. In a brief response via Facebook Messenger, they wrote: "We have a solution, we won't close down entirely, when the time is right we will make an announcement."
Since January 2025, an interim committee had been managing Ciné Sura following the death of its president. This arrangement had allowed the cinema to be handed over to new managers in a stable financial condition and on good terms with the municipality last summer.
The hope remains that the current situation does not mark the definitive end of the iconic local cinema.
