From 14 March onwards, citizens of six European countries will be permitted to travel visa-free to China for business, tourism, family or transit purposes. The new agreement applies to stays for up to a maximum of 15 days. Citizens from these countries who intend to stay in China beyond the 15-day limit must still apply for a visa prior to travel.
China Southern airlines launched direct flights from Luxembourg to Zhengzou in December 2023. According to a statement by the Chinese embassy, the new visa exemption is a further step to facilitate travel between the two nations.
The embassy wrote that the decision was fuelled by the desire to promote “economic and cultural exchanges between China and Luxembourg”. The direct passenger flights form part of the Chinese-Luxembourgish initiative “Air Silk Road”, which seeks to strengthen relations, cooperation and friendship between both countries.
Last November, China introduced similar visa exemptions for France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and Malaysia.
