Starting next week, patients in Luxembourg undergoing CT or MRI scans will no longer receive their images on CDs, as confirmed by Luxith G.I.E.

According to Christophe Nardin, Director of Luxith, hospitals across Luxembourg have been gradually phasing out the use of CDs for medical imaging. This week, the last hospital in the Grand Duchy will stop transferring scan images onto CDs, marking the end of an era for physical media in medical data sharing.

From next week onward, hospitals will upload medical images directly to patients’ electronic medical files, known as the Dossier de soins partagé (DSP). Alternatively, patients will receive a document containing a QR code, which provides secure access to their imaging data via an online link. The QR code method requires a two-factor authentication process to ensure data security.

Nardin explained that the shift away from CDs was driven by practical and financial considerations. “Practically no one still has a disc drive to access the information”, he noted, adding that the specialised burners required to create medical-grade CDs are very expensive – far costlier than the consumer-grade burners used for everyday purposes.
