The expansion of the Dudelange section of the A3 motorway from two to three lanes began in 2022. Drivers can now use three lanes in both directions between the Gasperich interchange and the Berchem service area, with the third lane reserved specifically for carpooling. This means that only vehicles with at least two people on board can legally use the carpool lane.

To enforce this rule, cameras were installed at the end of October 2025 to monitor compliance. These cameras have been operational since 1 December 2025, but are currently still in a test phase. According to the National Roads Administration (Ponts et Chaussées), the testing period has not been concluded. Although the two cameras are active and flash vehicles, there are currently no penalties for drivers detected using the carpool lane illegally.

Authorities currently expect the radars to go live with enforcement in autumn 2026. However, this date depends on the completion of dynamic road signage systems, known as CITA gantries, along the motorway. Delays in installing these electronic panels have been cited as the reason why the radars are still in their test phase.

Regular commuters on the Dudelange motorway will have noticed that many drivers are still using the third lane despite travelling alone, as sanctions are not yet enforced.

Construction work is currently underway near Livange in both directions. The Dudelange section of the motorway is approximately 4km long. According to the National Roads Administration, the A3's three-lane extension along its entire length is expected to be completed by 2030, projected to cost around €356 million.
