OvercrowdedCar pounds overwhelmed by number of seized vehicles

Vehicles stuck in place are becoming too numerous in the south of Luxembourg. This is what emerges from a parliamentary question published this week.

The overwhelming number of vehicles in car pounds was brought up by the Ministers of Justice and Home Affairs in response to a parliamentary question from ADR deputy Fred Keup published this week.

Seized and confiscated vehicles end up in the judicial impounds in Sanem and Colmar-Berg. In 2020, the latter received nearly 560 cars, half of which were sold. According to their manager, these impounds have also reached their limits.

In an attempt to free up more space, the municipality of Esch-sur-Alzette suggested these vehicles be parked on the site of the Crassier Terres Rouges, but it is an empty lot that is neither reinforced nor secured.

Minister of Justice Sam Tanson and Minister of Internal Security Henri Kox advocate for regional administrative impoundments, as the owners of cars who have been immobilised by the police usually pick up their vehicles quickly once the fine is paid.

Furthermore, with an increase in residents and cross-border commuters, more cars are on Luxembourg's streets.
