International Volunteer DayCanine helpers in the Grand Duchy

RTL Today
In light of the International Volunteer Day for Economic and Social Development, our colleagues from RTL met with two people who dedicate their lives to volunteer work.

Volunteer work is an essential mechanism to help render various areas in life successful, which may range from social work to climate activism or sport activities.

Zoé Ast has been volunteering at the Red Cross for 15 years. The primary school teacher is an active member of the canine squad, which trains together twice a week for around 3 to 4 hours. The team currently counts 25 members and 22 dogs. The training period for rescue dogs spans over 2 years in total and is already initiated at the age of 2 months in a playful manner.

Volunteer work is also important on the local and municipal level, as for instance at the Dudelange animal sanctuary. Nicky Colling, a social worker at the Junglinster high school, has been helping out for almost 8 years, looking after a variety of animals.

Around 10 dogs and 15 cats need daily care and attention, which includes both feeding and physical exercises. In 2017, the municipality of Dudelange thus decided to annually award special recognition to local volunteer workers.
