Holidays and long weekendsBridge days and holiday planning

If you are looking to get the most out of your holiday allowance this year, then this article is for you.

With eleven official holidays in Luxembourg, employees will have several opportunities to carve out a long weekend, all while taking a minimum of paid time off.

Sadly, five of the eleven days fall on a Saturday or Sunday. However, in case of holidays falling on a Sunday, the Luxembourg labour code prescribes a compensatory day off within three months of the original holiday.

This also applies more generally when a holiday falls on a day of the week the employee in question would not have worked.

In addition to the current New Year’s weekend, we have identified three additional three-day-weekends and one possibility of “making the bridge” as they like to say in Luxembourg, by taking one day off.

These are the legal holidays in Luxembourg for 2021:

  • New Year, Friday 1 January (three day weekend)
  • Easter Sunday/Easter Monday, 4 & 5 April (three day weekend)
  • Labour Day, Saturday 1 May
  • Europe Day, Sunday 9 May
  • Ascension, Thursday 13 May (Friday can be taken off)
  • Whit Monday, 24 May (three day weekend)
  • National Day, Wednesday 23 June
  • Feast of the Assumption, Sunday 15 August
  • All Saints, Monday 1 November (three day weekend)
  • Christmas, Saturday 25 December
  • Boxing Day, Sunday 26 December

In some sectors, there are also bank holidays (Good Friday, Christmas Eve...) and customary, but non-obligatory public holidays (Carnival Monday, Good Friday, Kiermes-Monday or All Souls’ Day).
