At the time of the incident, two minors were arrested and transferred to Unisec, the security unit for adolescents in Dreiborn.
Since then, one of the two culprits has been released because he turned 18 and is thus no longer a minor. This was confirmed by Minister of Justice Sam Tanson and Deputy State Prosecutor David Lentz during a meeting of the responsible Parliamentary Commission.
The Christian Social People's Party (CSV) had requested the session with Tanson and Lentz. CSV MP Laurent Mosar criticised the release of the culprit.
The MP stated that the release of a culprit accused of voluntary homicide is "unfortunate", including for the suspect himself. Tanson and Lentz apparently also regret how the situation played out but stated that their hands were tied because the current wording of the law does not leave them with another option then to release a minor who turns 18.
While the Minister announced that this "legal loophole" is to be fixed in the context of youth protection reform, Mosar stressed that this is not enough in the eyes of the CSV. The MP does not exclude the possibility of submitting a draft bill specific to this issue.
