LSAP takes overBob Steichen to become Ettelbruck Mayor

RTL Today
After 20 years at the helm, MP and Ettelbruck Mayor Jean-Paul Schaaf from the Christian Social People's Party (CSV) has been ousted by coalition partner Bob Steichen, First Alderman from the Luxembourg Socialist Workers' Party (LSAP).

After the socialists gained one seat in Sunday’s vote, both parties agreed to switch coalition roles that same evening.

The LSAP and the CSV now each hold five seats on the local council after the election. The Democratic Party (DP) has two seats and the Greens fell from two to one seat. This means that the CSV-LSAP coalition can stay in power, but teaming up with the DP was also a viable option for both factions.

Spirits were thus high when Steichen returned to the local LSAP headquarters as Mayor-elect on Sunday evening. CSV and LSAP had met shortly after the results were announced at 9pm and agreed to continue their coalition even if the balance of power had been reversed. Outgoing Mayor Schaaf commented that this shift has to be respected.

The LSAP-CSV coalition will now enter its fifth legislative period.
