
The two discussed issues including the two neighbours' good relationship, Brexit, and the European situation over the course of an hour.
The Prime Minister then took to Twitter to state that European leaders must not lose sight of the long-term nature of Europe, even with the disruption caused by Brexit. He praised the attitude of Europe and the cooperation between Luxembourg and Germany.
In response to a journalist, Bettel stated that there is no competition concerning the companies that will emigrate to different European countries as a result of Brexit. Instead, he highlighted the need to guarantee the integrity of the European interior market.
Bettel confirmed that the meeting had been very peaceful and the German chancellor had again stressed the need for a regulated Brexit to occur.
The chancellor was also asked if she hoped to keep her role as chancellor, to which Merkel responded that she will only remain until 2021 to complete her mandate as the current chancellor.
