New data from the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (STATEC) reveals a 7% increase in bankruptcies during the first half of 2025, with 593 cases recorded. The figures, published Wednesday, show holding companies and investment funds accounted for nearly a third of these failures (167).

The construction sector saw 89 bankruptcies, resulting in 515 job losses – a 10% decline in failures but 35% fewer job cuts compared to 2024. Retail also struggled, with 84 bankruptcies affecting 186 employees. Meanwhile, the hospitality sector (HORESCA) reported 61 bankruptcies and 229 job losses amid Luxembourg’s ongoing, gradual unemployment rise (currently 6%).

Liquidations surge 28%

Liquidation procedures showed a sharper uptick, jumping 28% year-over-year – though STATEC notes this represents just 20 additional court rulings compared to 2024’s historically low figures. Again, holding companies and funds bore the brunt of these closures.
