From 15 March onwards, the municipality of Luxembourg City wants to hire additional private security firms to patrol the Bonnevoie neighbourhood.
The announcement was made by Luxembourg City councilman Laurent Mosar in an interview on RTL Radio on Tuesday morning, and was not particularly welcomed by Tanson.
The Minister of Justice reacted to Mosar's statements by pointing out the law only grants very limited power to private security personnel. And indeed, Tanson stressed that this domain must remain the sole responsibility of the country's police force.
However, Tanson added that the law on private security is to be revised. It is for instance to be assessed, whether a selective Platzverweis (i.e. the authority to expel people from public areas) could be introduced.
This would enable police officers to force people to leave entries to residential buildings, for example. A general Platzverweis, however, will not be introduced.
