According to the association for the support of immigrant workers (Asti), there are discrepancies between Luxembourg's rhetoric on international human rights and what actually happens in Luxembourg in terms of immigration policy.
A woman was recently deprived of her passport because her papers were not in order when she came to file a complaint. After getting her identity document back, she can now apply for a six-month postponement of her deportation.
Jessica Lopes, a social worker with Asti, does not think that the process of her complaint will be over within those six months time. She believes an extension will be needed to the victim's dismay, who is currently in a limbo. As she is not allowed to work, she will probably get help from society, though there are only limited opportunities for undocumented migrants on the street.
This case may also discourage other victims of violence whose papers are not in order from reporting to the police, according to Asti. The association therefore asks that these people be able to file a complaint without the police automatically reporting them to the immigration authorities.
