ArcelorMittal will not be closing its site in Dommeldange. This is what the steel group confirmed to l'Essentiel following criticism from the LCGB after a meeting of the steel sector tripartite on Thursday morning.

The union had spoken of a "macabre deal": on the one hand there was delocalisation and on the other, the Dommeldange location was very valuable.

ArcelorMittal told l'Essentiel they were discussing whether the mechanical workshops in Dommeldange were still efficient for Belval, Differdange and Rodange. Most of the location in Dommeldange no longer sees activities and there are talks of a big new quarter being developed.

Concerning the 536 jobs to be cut, the LCGB found that 308 could be solved with early retirement, with 237 of them in adjusted early retirement. 208 positions would need to go via reclassification.

The steel group had announced a major restructuring in September, driven by a reduced demand in steel as well as automation and externalisation of certain activities.

There are total investments planned between 150 and 200 million Euro.

No date has been fixed for the next meeting.
