New officesAmazon Europe leaves Clausen for Kirchberg

The buildings vacated by the online commerce giant could be taken over by the Ministry of Education.

2,200 employees working for the American e-commerce company will be based in six buildings in the Kirchberg-Grünewald-Sud district, close to the hospital.

Amazon's journey in the Grand Duchy began in 2004, with a simple letter box on Boulevard Royal, then in the Grund in 2005. The business then expanded its activities in Luxembourg thanks to new international taxation rules, housing its operations in a new building on Rives de Clausen, in 2012/2013.

The quiet neighbourhood comprising just 1,000 residents will feel the loss of Amazon's 700 employees, particularly shops, restaurants and cafés in the area. The proprietor of an establishment in Clausen remarked that it had been quiet since Amazon's departure - too quiet, in fact. Business owners in the area are hopeful that the vacant buildings will soon host new professionals.

No definitive decision

The Clausen buildings belonging to the agency "M Immobilier" could be rented out to the Ministry of Education. Some services pertaining to the largest ministry in the country are in need of new locations. Officials told RTL that Clausen is undergoing analysis by the public buildings service as a potential solution.

A general concept is in progress but there has not been a final decision to date.
