The Fund aims to build 1,000 affordable housing units annually from 2027 - up from 650 this year.
The Housing Fund manages the largest affordable rental stock in the country, with more than 5,000 inhabitants benefiting from low-cost housing, according to the latest report. In 2022, the Fund placed 4,368 housing units on the market, including 479 units built for the State and affiliated institutions, 1,732 units intended for sale, and 2,157 units reserved for rental. The number of rental units has increased by 5% over the past five years, while saleable units have increased by just 1%.
Faced with growing economic concerns and an increase in construction prices, the Fund noted that the need for affordable housing is more crucial than ever.
102 units were constructed in 2022 - twice as many as in 2019 and four more than in 2021. However, compared to 2018, when 133 were completed, there is still room for improvement. Construction is still ongoing for 459 housing units.
2022 also marked the start of the medium and large-scale projects “An der Schmëtt” in Biwer and “Wunne mat der Wooltz” in Wiltz. The “An der Schmëtt” district plans for the construction of 164 housing units on an area of 5.5 hectares, the first of which are forecast to be completed in 2026. The “Wunne mat der Wooltz” project envisages 1,085 affordable housing units over 34 hectares.
The report also highlighted the Fund’s dedication to using sustainable construction methods, as well as renovating existing structures to meet current energy and legislative standards. The first energy renovation works will begin in 2024.
In recent years, nearly 80% of the residences or houses built by the Fund have been powered by air-source or geothermal heat pumps.
