The accident, which occurred just before 9am near the Berchem services, left traffic backed up as far as the border and beyond. Reports said the traffic jam extended beyond the French border as far as Kanfen on the A31.
According to motorway surveillance, the right-hand lane of the motorway was blocked until around 9.45am, when traffic jams appeared to ease somewhat.
