A new bridge was installed in Bettembourg on Saturday and will soon provide a safe connection between the town's eastern and western districts.
The previous footbridge had become too small to remain in place following the widening of the A3 motorway to three lanes.
In a large-scale operation carried out this weekend, the old structure was dismantled and the new one positioned with the help of two massive cranes.
The new bridge is a single steel construction requiring no welding. It measures 60 metres long, around 20 metres longer than the old bridge, and is three metres wide, allowing not only for pedestrians and cyclists to cross safely in both directions but also for emergency vehicles to pass if needed, something that was not possible with the previous structure.
The installation required a full closure of the A3 motorway in both directions between the Gasperich and Bettembourg interchanges, from Friday evening until Monday morning.
