In September 2025, the Findel weather station measured 266.6 litres of rain per square metre – almost four times the usual amount expected over the same period.
September therefore experienced the highest amount of monthly rainfall since records began in Luxembourg back in 1947. Previously, the highest amount was 232.2 litres, recorded in December 1993.
Luxembourg as a whole experienced more rainfall than usual, but the amount varied greatly from region to region, according to Meteolux analysis. In the canton of Mersch, some places recorded up to 300 litres of rain per square metre. On average, there was around 200 litres per square metre.
The cause of this exceptional rainfall is thought to be a combination of low pressure areas over the British Isles and high pressure in northeastern Europe, which led to a blockade. As a result, rain fronts repeatedly gathered over Luxembourg, particularly in the first and last days of the month.
