A day after primary schools reopened their doors, secondary schools in Luxembourg welcomed their newest and youngest students on Tuesday.

Following the return of primary school pupils on Monday, first-year secondary students across Luxembourg began their new academic year on Tuesday.

At the Lycée du Nord in Wiltz, the morning was marked by a palpable sense of anticipation as students embarked on this significant step in their education. The teenagers, who hail from across the northern region, were called in alphabetical order by their form tutors before proceeding to their classrooms. For many, the environment was new, and they were yet to meet their future classmates.

This nervousness was reflected in student comments. "I'm a little nervous, but I'm looking forward to the new year and I'm curious to see what the year has in store," one said. Another acknowledged, "I'm a bit stressed, I don't know if I'll be in classes with people I know. So I'm still a bit scared of being on my own. But I'm happy to be here."

Many parents were also present to offer support on this important day. One parent, there with their second daughter, stated they wanted "to support her, to make sure she gets off to a good start." Another emphasised the scale of the transition, saying, "It's a big change and I didn't want to miss it [...] I want to offer my son good support as he starts a new school life here."

The Lycée du Nord welcomed 240 new first-year pupils for the 2025-2026 school year, bringing its total student population to nearly 1,300. This year, the school is implementing a new rule: a near-total ban on mobile phones on the premises. The devices are only permitted in the canteen and a dedicated room. This decision was made collaboratively by the school management, teaching staff, and representatives from the parent and student committees.
