Supported by nearly 24,000 donors, MSF Luxembourg's 2024 activity report reveals that over 98% of its €7.6 million budget came from private sources.

In 2024, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) Luxembourg raised €7.6 million in donations, supported by nearly 24,000 active donors.

According to its newly released activity report, over 98% of its funding originated from private sources, a strategic and "deliberate" choice to maintain the organisation’s operational independence.

The communications and fundraising arm of the humanitarian organisation emphasised its commitment to financial transparency and strict management. "We place the utmost importance on transparency towards the people who support us," stated Esther Leick, Director of Communications and Fundraising.

The donor base demonstrated broad national support, with at least one MSF donor residing in 98% of Luxembourg's municipalities.

Nearly 9,000 of these supporters are regular givers, whose consistent contributions accounted for approximately one-third of the annual total, or €2.3 million. While reliant on this broad support, MSF Luxembourg also depends on major donors and legacies to fund its operations.

The strong local presence is considered essential to its global mission. "Last year, we strengthened our impact in Luxembourg with research programmes and awareness initiatives, especially among the younger generations," said Engy Ali, President of MSF Luxembourg.

Despite robust fundraising results, the organisation expressed deep concern over a global decline in humanitarian aid. Thomas Kauffmann, Director of MSF Luxembourg, highlighted that drastic funding cuts targeting major international players, such as USAID, are creating critical shortfalls. He stated that while MSF is often asked to compensate for the withdrawal of other aid groups, the overwhelming demand makes it "absolutely impossible" to fill the growing gaps.

These financial challenges coincided with severe humanitarian crises in 2024, particularly in Gaza and Sudan, where MSF reported that "civilians, humanitarian workers, and also infrastructure were regularly attacked." The report noted that 12 MSF staff members have been killed in Gaza over the past 20 months.

Globally, MSF significantly expanded its medical activities, recording over 16 million outpatient consultations, 1.6 million hospital admissions, 368,900 births assisted, and more than 506,000 mental health sessions.
