Post Luxembourg will suspend parcel deliveries to the United States from 23 August, citing uncertainty surrounding a new US customs decree that abolishes duty-free exemptions.

Under the decree, issued on 30 July, shipments valued at up to $800 will no longer be exempt from customs charges. From 29 August, all goods sent to the US, regardless of their value, will be subject to duties.

The technical guidelines for the reform were only published by US customs authorities in mid-August and, according to Post Luxembourg, still contain several unresolved operational and technical issues. The postal operator said this has made it “impossible” to continue sending parcels via the traditional network.

Although the decree does not formally take effect until 29 August, Post Luxembourg will stop accepting parcels from 23 August to avoid items being delayed or blocked in transit.

The company stressed that the new regulations apply solely to parcels. Letters and other documents can continue to be sent to the US without restriction.

To ensure continuity of service, Post Luxembourg is working with its partner DHL to provide an alternative solution. Through DHL’s international express network, both private and business customers will be able to continue sending parcels to the US. This option will be available at 'Espaces POST' and post offices, but not at 'Points POST' in partner outlets. Letters, however, can still be sent through the entire sales network, including 'Points POST'.
