FC Luxembourg City's youth squad is mourning 16-year-old player Azaria, who died Wednesday after being struck by a train near Leudelange station, the club confirmed Thursday.
FC Luxembourg City confirmed on Thursday that the pedestrian fatally struck by a train near Leudelange station on Wednesday evening was Azaria, a 16-year-old player from their youth squad. Emergency services pronounced the victim dead at the scene.
"Azaria was much more than just a promising player. He was a ray of sunshine on the pitch, a comrade, and a young man with a big heart. His passion for football, his infectious laugh, and his kindness will be remembered", FC Luxembourg City wrote on their Facebook page.
A club official told RTL that Azaria was a "top lad" whose big goal was to one day play for the club's first team. He was always present at recent friendly matches and always gave his all in training. The club is in deep shock over what has happened.
Memorial plans announced
The club will honour Azaria during their 17 August match against FC Wiltz and establish a memorial in their clubhouse. Players will have opportunity to process the tragedy during Monday's first post-summer training session.
Police confirmed the investigation continues but currently shows no evidence of suicide.
