The new US ambassador to Luxembourg, Stacey Feinberg, has already made controversial comments during an appearance at the US Senate in June, accusing Luxembourg of being "naive" with regard to China.
According to Luxtimes, Feinberg said “Lucifer does not show up looking like the devil,” claiming that China would infiltrate Luxembourg's education system, or steal intellectual property. She added that the Grand Duchy should better monitor and limit China's attempts to increase its influence in Europe using the financial centre.
The Chinese embassy in Luxembourg has vehemently rejected the accusations and asked the "American woman" to correct her statements, as reported by Luxtimes. They said Feinberg was trampling on all diplomatic norms with her ideological prejudice.
Luxembourg's foreign minister, Xavier Bettel, told L'Essentiel that there is no need for "clarification from China or the United States." He said he believed Feinberg will realise her image of the Grand Duchy is wrong once she has spent some time in the country, and added that he viewed China as a rival and a partner.
