Facing criticism over lengthy delays, the LNS has reduced biopsy wait times by optimising workflows and digitising systems, with urgent cases now processed in three days.
The National Health Laboratory (LNS) has successfully reduced waiting times for biopsy results by more than 50% following an internal restructuring effort.
The improvements stem from organisational changes, process optimisation, enhanced communication with healthcare providers, and increased digitisation within the LNS' biopsy analysis department in Dudelange.
In January 2024, patients waited an average of 20 days for biopsy results. By May 2025, processing times had dropped to just nine days in most cases, with urgent results now available within approximately three days – even during peak periods.
However, the restructuring remains ongoing. Meanwhile, Minister of Health Martine Deprez confirmed that discussions are being held regarding the LNS' monopoly on biopsy analyses. In response to a parliamentary question from Democratic Party (DP) MPs Mandy Minella and Gérard Schockmel, Deprez stated that the government is evaluating a potential private-sector collaboration, weighing factors such as care quality, public interest, and national sovereignty.
