As part of a judicial investigation opened for voluntary and involuntary manslaughter, a former doctor from the Emile Mayrisch Hospital Center (CHEM) was placed in pre-trial detention this Friday, 20 June, 2025. The investigation concerns serious incidents that occurred in the palliative care unit in Esch-sur-Alzette.

A judicial inquiry into exceptionally serious events has shaken the Emile Mayrisch Hospital Center. The Luxembourg public prosecutor’s office confirmed on Friday that a former physician at the hospital was taken into custody, suspected of involvement in a patient’s death in 2024.

The case was initiated in December 2024 by CHEM management following internal reports questioning the care provided to a palliative care patient. The findings were deemed serious enough for the hospital to launch an internal disciplinary procedure and refer the matter directly to the prosecutor’s office.

The judicial investigation specifically targets charges of voluntary and involuntary manslaughter, the prosecutor stated in an official press release. As part of the investigation, a search and seizure were carried out on 19 June, 2025, at the suspect’s home.

The next day, June 20, following an interrogation by an investigating judge, the doctor was placed in pre-trial detention after a warrant had been issued.

This is an ongoing investigation under the supervision of the examining magistrate. No final conclusions have been drawn, and the prosecutor’s office emphasizes the presumption of innocence.
