Luxembourg MEP Charles Goerens has withdrawn from representing the European Parliament at a key development funding conference in Seville, after his report was rejected and no common position was reached, calling it a failure of the EU's commitment to the world's poorest.

Following a failure by the European Parliament on Tuesday to reach a common position on development funding, sharp criticism has emerged from liberal political group Renew Europe. Spokespeople described the outcome as "a worrying signal for the most vulnerable people in the world", in reaction to the Parliament's inability to agree on a joint stance ahead of the upcoming development financing conference in Seville.

A report drafted by Luxembourg MEP Charles Goerens, also of Renew Europe and the Democratic Party of Luxembourg (DP), was rejected during the vote.

At present, there is a €4.3 billion funding shortfall. Goerens argued that the lack of consensus represents not only a setback for Europe's credibility but also for its global partners, who have traditionally viewed the EU as a reliable force in development cooperation.

In response, he announced he would not attend the Seville conference on behalf of the Parliament, saying he could not in good conscience represent an institution that, due to political manoeuvring and extremist alliances, has chosen to abandon its commitments to the world's poorest.
