The March to Gaza. which was set to start on 15 June, brought together an estimated 4,000 international civilians in a pacific attempt to demand the unrestricted flow of humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip. Among them were five participants from Luxembourg, who joined with the aim of drawing attention to the worsening humanitarian crisis in the region and to counter the ‘perceived indifference by governments’.
As confirmed in a press release issued Monday morning by March to Gaza Luxembourg, the delegation was prevented from reaching the Rafah area following violent interactions with Egyptian security forces.
“Everything was done to keep us from marching”, says Maya Garman in a video testimony shared on Instagram. “Some were stopped, detained at the borders, deported to their countries of origin, and those who passed – like us – were tracked constantly, from hotels, in taxis, busses”.
Although unable to complete the mission, the volunteers continue to call on European governments to impose sanctions on Israel and to uphold the principles of international justice.
The delegation is returning from Cairo in two groups, with one flight arriving Monday evening and the second expected Tuesday morning.
