For the first time since October 2024, Luxembourg's unemployment rate has inched upward, reaching 6% in April even as new registrations with the national employment agency declined.

Luxembourg's unemployment rate edged up to 6% in April 2025, marking its first increase after holding steady at 5.9% since October 2024, according to data released Tuesday by the National Employment Agency (ADEM). The slight uptick comes despite a marginal decline in new jobseeker registrations during the month.

Key trends

New registrations fell to 2,379 residents in April, representing 157 fewer than the same period last year. At the end of April, total registered jobseekers reached 18,596, a 5.7% increase compared to April 2024. The most affected demographics included long-term unemployed (those registered for 12 months or more), workers over 45, and highly skilled jobseekers. Sector-wise, accounting and road transport professions experienced particularly high unemployment rates.

While employers reported 3,577 new job openings in April – a 6.3% annual increase, with kitchen staff positions showing notable demand – the total number of vacancies at month's end stood at 7,200, reflecting a 10% decrease from the previous year.

Decline in partial unemployment

In a separate release, the Ministry of the Economy noted reduced demand for partial unemployment schemes. Only 54 businesses applied for June support, down six from May, with 51 approvals covering approximately 5,950 employees.
