A historically protected windmill in Luxembourg City’s Belair neighbourhood is at risk of removal due to ongoing construction work at the Centre Hospitalier (CHL).
The structure, protected since 2002 and located in Val Fleuri adjacent to the CHL construction site, reportedly obstructs emergency vehicle access routes.
According to RTL sources, the windmill’s position prevents ambulances from using the fastest exit route from the hospital site. This has sparked a jurisdictional debate between ministries. Minister of Culture Eric Thill reportedly assured preservation during a late 2024 meeting with the Luxembourg Federation for the Protection of Monuments (LDF), while Minister of Health Martine Deprez now holds decision-making authority regarding the structure’s fate.
The threatened mill holds distinction as one of only two surviving historical windmills in Luxembourg, alongside the second one in Niederwiltz. It gave its name to both a nearby bus stop on Route d’Arlon and a planned residential development. Originally part of the former maternity hospital complex, the structure now stands within the active CHL construction zone.
