New speed cameras on the A3 motorway's carpool lane will automatically detect, and penalise, solo drivers attempting to bypass traffic, the government has confirmed.

The recently opened carpool lane on the A3 motorway will be equipped with speed cameras capable of detecting whether a vehicle has multiple occupants. This measure aims to prevent solo drivers from using the lane as a shortcut to bypass traffic.

In response to a parliamentary question on Tuesday, Minister for Mobility Yuriko Backes confirmed that automatic speed cameras will be installed along the motorway.

Since the lane's first section opened in March, police have been conducting checks, Backes noted. The minister also indicated that authorities are considering deploying various devices to penalise motorists who drive alone in the designated third lane.

The installation plan is still "under consideration," but Backes provided details: a test phase for the cameras is "scheduled" for late 2025 or early 2026. During this period, no fines will be issued by the automated system.

If implemented, the cameras are expected to become fully operational by spring 2026. The minister pledged to provide further updates "in due course."

Meanwhile, work on the A3 motorway continues. The Livange viaduct, a high-risk section of the motorway, will reopen in the coming days. The full expansion of the A3 is projected for completion by 2030.
